Amsterdam: Eastern Docklands
Modern Architecture

Eastern DocklandsBesides centuries old canals and storage houses Amsterdam boasts some great modern architecture. In the Eastern Docklands (Oostelijk Havengebied) especially, you'll be amazed by apartment buildings, offices, and spectacular bridges that connect the various islands. Many of these buildings have been designed by Holland's top architects, like MVRDV, Jo Coenen, and Neutelings Riedijk. The Eastern Docklands are situated on several islands in Lake IJ (IJmeer).

Rotterdam: City of Architecture
Modern Architecture

Cube Houses in RotterdamRotterdam has been elected 'City of Architecture' for 4 years in a row. Because of its many skyscrapers it is often referred to as 'Manhattan at the Meuse' (the Meuse, or 'Maas' in Dutch, is the river running through the city). The comparison to Manhattan won't hold, I guess (I've never been to New York though), but at least it reflects Rotterdam's ambitions and the fact that Rotterdam is the only city in the Netherlands boasting a "skyline". Besides, during the next years more skyscrapers will be added to the already impressive number.

"Sound & Vision" in Hilversum
Modern Architecture

Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid in HilversumHilversum (Noord-Holland region) is a nice town, which is best known for its broadcoast corporations and television studios. De Uithof in Utrecht
Modern Architecture

Minnaert Building by Neutelings and RiedijkSince the 1990s De Uithof has made a huge transformation. Most Utrecht University buildings are concentrated in this area, including the university library and many faculties. There are also various apartment blocks containing student housing. Walking around here you will encounter the Educatorium, which was designed by Rem Koolhaas/O.M.A. Other well-known Dutch architects have left their marks in De Uithof as well. For instance, next to the Educatorium there's the NMR Facility, designed by Ben van Berkel/UNstudio.

Almere: Utopolis?
Modern Architecture

Side by Side in AlmereLet's face it: Almere is an open air museum for architecture lovers. As it's a whole new city, designed from scratch about 30 years ago and expanding ever since, it has to be sort of a large playground to architects and urban planners. The results are controversial. In Holland, for example, Almere has the image of a "grey", soulless city, entirely made of concrete, but fortunately for me, being a resident of Almere, this image doesn't match reality at all!
